Side Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

Have you ever spent your night tossing and turning so much that you must skim on your sleep? If you have, you know what it’s like to be sleep deprived- cranky, moody, low on energy … and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

You might sweep sleep deprivation under the rug but let us tell you its long-term side effects are real. What does it do? Drains your mental ability and affects your physical ability, so much so that scientists have linked several side effects to sleep deprivation.

1. It Dumbs You Down!

Quite literally, the less you sleep the more it affects your cognitive memory.
Here’s a more detailed science of it - When you don’t get enough sleep your ability to pay attention, stay alert, concentration, logical reasoning, and problem solving ability all go for a toss!

That’s not all! When you do hit the haystack, your sleep plays a predominant role in consolidation. In layman's language, the less you sleep, the less likely you are to remember what you’ve learned.

2.Lack Of Sleep = Depression

When a study was conducted in America, the results with a correlation of depression and sleep were shocking. People who suffered from anxiety and depression would get less than 6 hours of sleep!

Sleep loss and depression are almost codependent, one cannot exist without the other. On the positive side, solving sleep insomnia is equivalent to taking a positive step forward to solve your depression as well.

3. You age faster

As a teenager with acne or other skin problems you have probably heard the saying “make sure you get enough sleep".As we grow older we tend to forget this. The result of poor sleep has numerous disadvantages for your skin. Your skin ages faster, your skin cannot repair from environmental factors like sun damage resulting in poor quality of your skin.

4. Sleep loss impairs judgment

When you aren’t accessing a situation correctly, your judgment as an outcome can be inaccurate. Sleep deprivation could lead to poor judgment of any situation since comprehension becomes a challenge. This then leads to poor judgment of the situation because of your disorientation.

In an increasingly fast-paced world the last thing you need to have going for you is your lack of sleep. Especially if it affects your day-to-day functions which are essential to help you excel in life. So, we recommend making sure you get a minimum of 7 - 8 hours of sleep so you can be the best version of yourself.
