The Benefits of Power Napping

As kids, we are often coerced into taking naps during the afternoon to regulate our sleep cycle. On the contrary, as adults, those naps tend to decrease with age. That being said, we often experience lethargy and drowsiness, typically anywhere between 5 - 8 hours since we have been awake. This drowsiness can then affect the way we work, our attitude, and our productivity throughout the course of the day.

So, what exactly do you do to solve a problem as such? This is why we would like to introduce to you the concept of power napping.

What exactly is a power nap?

A power nap is also often termed a cat nap, the nap often terminates before you fall into the realm of deep sleep. The idea is to revitalize the sleeper and hence making him much more productive than he would be otherwise.

As an adult we are all aware 7 - 8 hours to sleep is counted as a well-rested sleep, anything less can leave you tired and often anything more can do the same.

So how does a power nap help?

A power nap should be taken between 5 - 8 hours from the time the sleeper woke up. The nap itself should last anywhere from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. Studies have shown that sleeping 20 minutes in the afternoon will help you feel more well-rested than extra 20 minutes in the morning.

People often wonder how power napping is better than having a quick cup of joe, we have an explanation for that too! Studies show that caffeine can decrease memory performance, which roughly translates to - you will be awake, but you are also prone to making more mistakes.

Napping also has several benefits, so here some we thought were worth mentioning.

Researchers claim that napping regularly reduces stress and also the risk of heart disease. Napping also helps combat diseases such as depression which happens to be a rising concern amongst today’s generation. Napping a good way to help your body rest, it also helps the negativity not get too into your head.

Here are some tips to nap better

  • Remember that duration is king: Don’t nap too little yet don’t nap way too much.
  • Timing is crucial: When you nap in the day is as important as how long you nap. Make sure you are napping at a time where you need it too most.
  • Find your nappy place: Making sure the place you nap in is comfortable and easy to fall asleep in is essential to make the most of your nap.

So, there you have it, the power of a cat nap and why you should be doing it to increase your productivity and overall health!
